My Inner Guides: Visualization Audio for IFS and Parts Work
A guided audio helping patients contact inner wisdom figures and access Self-energy through structured imagery practice.
Clinical vignettes
Accessing Self-Energy in Chronic Avoidance
Clinical picture. A, a woman in her late 30s, presented with longstanding emotional avoidance and a strong inner critic that consistently blocked reflective work in session. After several weeks of psychoeducation on parts work, the clinician introduced the Mes guides intérieurs audio as a between-session practice, framing it as a way to cultivate a witnessing presence rather than to suppress the critical part. A engaged with the recording three times over the following week, noting that she was able to imagine a calm, older figure who did not judge her. In the next session she described a brief but distinct shift toward curiosity about her avoidance, which opened a productive conversation about an exile the critic had been protecting.
Grounding Parts Work After Acute Destabilization
Clinical picture. T, a man in his mid-50s with a trauma history, found that unstructured imagery exercises sometimes amplified activation rather than settling it. The clinician selected the Mes guides intérieurs audio specifically because its structured format offered a predictable container, and reviewed the first few minutes together in session before assigning it as home practice. T reported that having a guided voice orient the imagery reduced the sense of exposure he associated with silent meditation. Over three weeks he began arriving at sessions with brief written notes about the guide figure that emerged, which the dyad used as entry points into parts dialogue without requiring T to narrate raw traumatic material directly.
The clinical challenge: why inner wisdom is hard to reach through words alone
In parts-based work, one of the most common obstacles is access. Patients understand, intellectually, that they carry inner resources alongside their wounds. Yet when they sit alone between appointments, the critical voice or the anxious part tends to be loudest. The notion of an inner guide, a wiser, calmer internal presence, often lands as abstract or even unconvincing when introduced only verbally in session.
Visualization changes this. Imagery activates the same representational systems as lived experience, making inner figures feel genuinely present rather than invented. This is why guided audio is particularly suited to inner-guide work: it carries the patient into the experience rather than explaining it. The gap between conceptual understanding and felt access to Self-energy is exactly what this audio is designed to bridge.
If your work draws on IFS, this resource pairs naturally with written tools like the Exploring a Non-Activated IFS Part worksheet or the IFS Trailhead fiche, which help patients map parts before they meet them. For patients not yet using parts language, inner-guide imagery can also serve as a first, gentler entry point.
> À retenir : Access to Self is rarely built through explanation, guided imagery gives patients a repeatable, embodied path to it, one they can take on their own.

My Inner Guides is a structured guided visualization audio that leads the patient through an immersive inner journey to meet one or more wisdom figures, inner guides who embody calm, clarity, and resourcefulness. The experience is grounded in imagery: the patient is guided to settle, orient inward, and allow a guide to take form in a mental landscape, then to receive whatever that figure has to offer.
The audio works at a somatic and representational level, not an analytical one. It asks nothing of the patient's verbal reasoning; instead it lets imagery and sensation do the work. This makes it accessible even to patients who resist or intellectualize in traditional self-reflection exercises.
For clinicians working with core beliefs or early maladaptive schemas, this audio offers a complementary resource: it does not challenge beliefs directly, but creates a lived, felt alternative to the inner critic's voice. It can also support patients engaged in exile work, see Noticing an Exile (IFS), by reinforcing that a Self-led presence is genuinely available.
> This resource is available to your patients through the SessionFuel patient app, once you assign it, your patient receives it directly on their phone and can complete the audio autonomously between sessions, at a time that suits them.
Clinical library
600+ clinical tools
A library built with and for clinicians, ready to use in session and extend between appointments.
Assign this audio as homework after a session in which you have introduced the idea of inner parts or Self-energy, whether through IFS framing, imagery-based schema work, or simply the notion that patients hold more inner wisdom than their distress allows them to access.
Suitable profiles include patients working on self-compassion, those stuck in harsh self-criticism, patients building positive self-perception, and anyone for whom verbal self-reflection tends to loop into self-attack. It is also well suited to patients who respond well to imagery in session and want a structured practice they can replicate independently. Patients with significant dissociation should be screened individually before being assigned somatic visualization work.
When introducing it, keep it simple: "Between now and our next appointment, I'd like you to listen to this audio once or twice. You don't need to analyze what comes up, just notice whatever appears and, if you like, jot down a word or two afterward."
When the patient returns, the richest clinical material often lives in what surprised them about the figure that appeared, what the guide said or embodied, and any felt sense of contrast with their habitual self-critical inner voice. These observations can be brought directly into the following session as live data for parts work, schema exploration, or values clarification alongside tools like Exploring Values or Personal Meaning and Direction.

For patients earlier in the work, consider assigning Birdsong Guided Visualization or Gentle Rain Visualization first to build basic imagery tolerance and somatic settling before introducing the relational complexity of an inner guide. For patients further along, the guide figure can become a recurring reference point, something to consult mentally when the RAIN Mindfulness Technique alone is not enough to create distance from a dominant part.
